Water technology is constantly changing, with technological advances that deliver the best quality of water possible. Global water treatment systems manufacturers are currently looking at state-of-the-art filtration technologies to make their filtration systems even more efficient. Today we’re going to be looking at a few of the popular filtration systems.

Nanotechnology
This highly efficient and cost-effective filtration system is used on an atomic or molecular level. Nanotechnology’s major applications in water filtration processes include silver, copper, and zero-valent iron (ZVI) nanoparticles, nanostructured photocatalysts, nano-membranes, and nano adsorbents.

The use of a large surface-to-volume ratio of nanoparticles can enhance the adsorption of chemical and biological particles while separating the contaminants at a much lower concentration. These nano adsorbents will feature specific physical and chemical properties for the removal of pollutants from the water.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are one of the most well-known nanomaterials in the water purification industry. These can remove any organic, inorganic, and biological contaminants from the water. Global companies that use this nanotechnology include Alfa Laval, Applied Membranes, DowDuPont, GEA Group, Inopor, and Koch Membrane Systems.

Acoustic Nanotube Technology

This technology was invented by scientists at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. It works by employing acoustics in the right pressure places, directing the water through the nanotubes.

This will block any larger molecules and contaminants from entering. It also uses less power than regular filtration systems and takes the water away from the contaminants instead of removing the pollutants from the water. Using this system eliminates the need to flush the filter system.

These are used in municipal water plants, medical factories, distilleries, laboratories, desalination plants, industrial facilities, wastewater treatment plants, and consumer segments. The best part is that it’s scalable to use a number of different filters, so you can judge based on the filtration needs that you may have.

The good news is that they’re available for firms to license and one day use in a commercial water filtration system product.

Automated Variable Filtration Technology
This is a relatively simple process where the upward flow of water is cleaned by a downward flow of filter media. This filtration process eliminates the need for extra steps in the process for filter media cleaning. This process uses descending bed filters that are constantly cleaned. The configuration of this system is in two stages, integrating two sets of media filters that function either in serial or parallel mode.

The water quality that’s delivered is comparable to that of the micro-filtration technology at a fraction of the overall cost of a low-pressure membrane. Since this has no moving parts, it uses less power, giving people that use it overall savings on the operating and maintenance costs.

These are available for municipal drinking water, wastewater, wastewater recycling and reuse, pre-filtration for membrane process, and desalination applications. R2O Water Technologies, Process Research ORTECH (PRO), and Eureka Forbes are the major companies that use them.

These are a few of the most popular water purification technologies used today.
